Diet Excuse Number 64

Cute!!
Isn’t it funny when you go to fix something in the kitchen and you find food you didn’t know you had. But now it has gone bad cause you just forgot about it. Or you’ve spend at least 10 minutes sifting through the jungle of pantry items cause YOU KNOW you have cinnamon somewhere. I definitely have soo…
I’ve recently been developing food planning strategies for myself to help avoid this. (And I also just love strategies and spreadsheets) so I thought I would just share some that seem to really be working for me lately.
For a while it seemed like every week I was having a complete food renovation, where I would spend 200 dollars on items that I would never use and eventually forget about. WASTE! Now I only spend about 50 a week (if that) because I have taken the time to REALLY KNOW WHAT I HAVE.
In addition its helpful to be able to see what I have. And that’s hard to do in these cluttered NYC cabinets. So what I like to do after I go shopping is: I’ll take my receipt, sit down at my computer and in an Excel document and type in everything I’ve just purchased and/or add those items to the master list I already have. Its an inventory list! Have an inventory for your food so you don’t have to go searching! Its also helpful to actually see the food listed together cause sometimes I’ll find myself saying “I have this and this and this and together I can make this. Oh cool!” which can save you more money cause you don’t have to buy totally new ingredients for another meal. Sounds time consuming but it only takes 2 minutes. Reasonable? Yeah.
When I go to the store about (twice a week) I mostly buy produce, but in addition to that produce, I’ll buy about 2 or 3 Pantry Items: Beans, Nuts, Seeds Grains, Snackie things, Spices, Cereals, Sugar, Dressings, Sauces etc.) Things that don’t go bad, to build up my pantry. That way when I need those things they are there and I rarely have to go out and get a TON of extra ingredients. Instead of buying them all in one fell swoop to make just ONE recipe.
Above all, the most important strategy is this; every time you buy something new something has to be thrown out. This is the rule of life and therefore should also be the rule of the fridge.

Have you ever noticed how a really common tactic among nutritionists is to say things like, “KALE IS SO DELICIOUS!” or “FRUIT IS YUMMY” or “OMG my vegetarian food is so much better than meat and dairy, I swear.”
Does it work? Does it make you go chomp on some kale and love it? Of course it…
HERROOO I SHOWED DIS TO YOUUUUU BEEENNNN!! so gotta reblawg.

And went to the Dr. cause I wasn’t getting any better (worse in fact) and low and behold I HAVE A BACTERIAL INFECTION thats “not Strep but something like it” (medical school). Telling everyone its Strep cause I don’t want to explain it. I actually think its worse than Strep cause not only do you have all the signs of a viral infection (congestion runny nose coughing) you also get all the symptoms of Strep (Fever, SEVERE SORE THROAT, achey) So I’m on z-pack. Took 2 today, thought I felt better but now I feel awful again. Maybe its the full day of coughing? Whatever. This week is gonna be stressful so its super duper important that do my body a solid and eat super super well and replace those lost bacteria from the antibiotics with a probiotic. Also I’ve been eating shit. Absolute shit. Crackers, cookies, chips and the like by the box cause wow that sensation of swallowing something crunchy massaging my poor throat was the only way I could find relief but probably not best for recovering. Body needs to be in bacteria fighting mode, not waste its energy trying to break down unhealthy shit. Probably going to be drinking alot of green juices to get the nutrients without filling me up. Hoping to be better by Christmas. See ya on the other side!!
The other day I felt a tickle in my throat and I knew what it was. The first of many of the chronic colds I experience during Cold and Flu Season. I see this as a perfect opportunity to share what I’m doing to nip this mother in the bud and maybe give you some ideas to stop your charging Rhinovirus.

Ya got it. Sorry. No matter how you set yourself up for immune success, the common cold is gonna get ya. Its unavoidable. You can get it from breathing in air for heaven’s sake! The best way to be prepared is to lead a healthy lifestyle to begin with (ha yeah right, don’t have time for that) But seriously, healthy diet means stronger immune systems. Doesn’t mean you won’t get it (cause you probably will) but it does mean you’re body might be able to handle it better (taking less time to recover, lessen severity of symptoms etc)
The reality with colds is this; Ya gotta ride the wave. Depending on how big that wave is can be up to you. I’m a day and a half into my cold and last night was the most excruciating of them all, cause I had to deal with my Bieber Fever. Typically I get a fever on the onset of my cold and typically I pop a fever reducer like an Advil. This time I decided not to.
Why? Because a fever is the body’s own natural remedy. Its creating a hostile environment for those fuckers to live in. You’re basically giving those bastards 3rd Degree Burns. If you take a fever reducer, it inhibits this natural process and it may take you extra time to recover.
Now to warn you. Fevers suck. They make you talk to yourself, your body pulses hot then cold, and you start feel like a mental patient. But its worth it to ride it out. I felt like crap crap crap last night and this morning. But now I can tell the fever is gone and I feel alot better. Duller sore throat and the beginning of a runny nose (which is a sign that the cold is progressing, and progressing FAST)
The hardest part is breaking out of the crazy delirium of the fever. The best way to do this is force yourself into some physical activity. I don’t mean put in P90X sassy, I mean take a walk, stretch. Light exercise. This gets your lymph system going and can help break your fever. But its very very hard. You have to force yourself to do it. It took me about 2 hours to clear the fog this morning. After walking to Physical Therapy, doing Physical Therapy, and walking back, I finally felt a little less crazy.
Be Brave! YOU CAN DO IT!
If your fever is 103 or over and lasts for longer than 24 hours. Get thee to the Dr. The DYI version won’t work for you as you might have a bacterial infection like Strep or something else.
Till Tomorrow!
If a food is organic it doesn’t mean that its good for you. I mean of course its better but people all of the sudden think organic means zero calories, healthy. etc. It just means there aren’t nasty chemical toxins and crap. Same nutritional content as the non organic version folks. I’m guilty of this thinking sometimes.
Organic Ice Cream, Chips, Cookies, and Cake exists. Everything can be organic. Don’t be fooled. Organic can still be unhealthy.
